I stopped again at the old trashy park after work and after 15 minutes of searching I came across a mid tone among some iron signals. After a minute of studying the signal I decided that this was indeed a separate target surrounded by deep iron signals. The 1901 dog tag was right at the four inch mark under a root. I am lucky I did not scratch it! It reads “Dog Tax 638 1901” and it is made of brass.
There is a row of houses just East of where I dug the tag. Two of those houses were built at the very beginning of the 20th century; one was built in 1901 and the other one in 1902. I would like to believe that one of the proud new home owners in Wichita’s early history was walking their rambunctious dog in the park when they lost this tag.
I think it is as cool as any old coin under the dirt!
That old trashy park still holds many treasures for those of us with the patience to seek them out.
Thank you for looking!
Very cool dog tag… as cool as any coin. That would be in my relic box for sure!
Thank you! I think it is one of the coolest relics I’ve ever found. And I didn’t scratch it! Somehow I manage to scratch all the cool relics I find.
