Secrets of the AT Pro

17 May

Not really! Most of what you will read on this post is known by many. Some things may come as a surprise to you; maybe.

Secret 1.  The less discrimination you use on the AT Pro, the greatest the depth you will achieve. How much depth will you gain? I don’t know. All I can tell you is that when I finally became brave enough to run my Pro on Zero mode, I began to find wheat cents and silver dimes at eight and nine inches of depth.
“But dude! I hate listening to the iron grunts!”. Trust me. You get used to it.
Some people discriminate anything below 75 on the Pro and claim to gain depth. I don’t believe it and neither should you. I have tried it and it didn’t pan out. What it did do, was to make it seem like I was finding stuff that was masked. I think this was due to the fact that the only tone I was allowed to hear was the high tone.

Secret 2.  Ground balance the AT Pro with the up and down coil technique (as described in the manual) and then, manually adjust the ground balance (GB) number ten points. Adjust it down if you want silver, up if you want gold.
When I first learned this technique, I was seeking more depth. I didn’t know at the time that it had something to do with gaining depth for a specific metal.

Secret 3.   Dig all mid tones that don’t fall into the range of square and round pull tabs. Every time I do this, I find neat stuff like tokens, buttons, and yes, coins. Also, dig all zinc penny signals. Some gold hides in there. Tokens and interesting relics fall in that range as well.

Secret 4.  It’s been said that 90% of gold falls in the foil range. My unscientific studies of many, many posts on the Internet seem to validate this.

Secret 5.  Silver coins that are less than eight inches deep will almost always give off a high tone, soft and dim. Silver coins that are deeper than eight inches will give out a mid tone or even an iron grunt. Sometimes they give out all three tones.
Once, I dug up a Mercury dime that gave only a mid-tone. The Merc was only six inches deep!

Secret 6.   When hunting for very deep coins, slow your swing considerably. Some of the deep high tones are just too soft and dim and are thus very easy to miss with a fast swing.

Secret 7.  Scrape the dirt with the coil when hunting and overlap your swings. The more you lift the coil off the ground, the more depth you lose. With the DD coil, you can loosen your overlap, which is nice because you can cover more ground that way.

Secret 8.  Dig a few scratchy, ugly signals when you begin to hunt a new site. The last gold ring I found didn’t have a nice solid signal. I was hunting a very trashy site and I can only figure that micro pieces of metal made the signal ugly.

Secret 9.  Very deep coins on the AT Pro give up broken high tones. If I get one high peep and the depth of the signal is 10+, I dig it. Especially if the subsequent mid-tones are repeatable and soft.

Secret 10. Pro mode goes deeper than Standard mode. By some tests, Pro is deeper by an inch!

Thank you for looking!

Thanks for the post! I have only had my AT Pro for a couple weeks so I’m still in my yard but I have a very interesting and tricky yard. You have given me some more options to explore.
