Miscellany

This is where I will put stuff I find that is useful to me -and maybe to you. This way I won’t have to search through the posts to find it.

HOW MUCH GOLD IS IN MY RING?
(24K is pure gold)

10K is 41.66% of 24K

14K is  58.33% of 24K

18K is 75% of 24K

A 10K gold ring that weighs 3 grams is 41.66% gold.
41.66% of 3 grams =
41.66/100 * 3 =
1.2498 grams.

So a 10K gold ring that weighs 3 grams has approximately 1.25 grams of gold in it.

NOTE: Take into account the weight of any stones when weighing the ring

WHY A DETECTOR’S DEPTH DECREASES WHEN USING DISCRIMINATION

This is the best explanation as to why most detectors lose depth when you use discrimination. It was posted by Keith Southern in the Tom Dankowski Open Forum

For the simplest of explanations is it looses sensitivity the more disc is us turned up..Put a machine on nail rejct and the highest sens right at the edge of instability then turn the disc up and eventually it will loose the instability.. the sens gets detuned to all metal’s the more you become biased towards lower conductor’s…The more of the signal you disc out the more of a good target signal it will take to signal..

A quarter is a quarter and airtest say 10 inches in nail disc….you are very biased to the high conductor’s like this…turn the disc up to pulltab and you are very biased to rejecting lower conductor’s…now the quarter will only be heard at 7 inches.. the quarter has not changed conductance but the machine has become more biased to rejecting conductance than accepting it…so now the quarter need’s to be bigger to gain the depth back to 10 inches more like a 50 cent piece size..

Sort of like looking at a star with naked eyes .. very easy to see.. put on sunglasses and the star get’s dim put on 2 pair of sunglasses and the star can disappear…your covering up the light…with a discriminator you are covering up the conductance…
this is in simple terms …LOL…

GOLD COIN READINGS ON THE V3i

The following was posted by Blind Squirrel on the Finds forum

Using the V3i, in the Coin Mode, with the D2 Coil and the settings of: RX 1, AM 55 and Disc 55, I had these results:

$1 Gold (Types 1,2 & 3) VDI……14-16……Dominant Frequency…..22.5 KHz
$2.5 Gold (Lib & Ind) VDI……33-35……Dominant Frequency……7.5 KHz
$3 Gold VDI……35-37……Dominant Frequency……7.5 KHz
$5 Gold (Lib & Ind) VDI……49-50……Dominant Frequency……7.5 KHz
$10 Gold (Lib & Ind) VDI……54-58……Dominant Frequency……7.5 KHz
$20 Gold (Lib & St. G) VDI……74-75……Dominant Frequency……2.5 KHz
$50 Gold Buffalo .9999 VDI……87-89…..Dominant Frequency…….2.5 KHz

All coins are either PCGS or NGC slabbed. I don’t know what , if any, influence the incapsulation had on any of these readings.

PULL TABS

  • Pull tabs started in 1962
  • “Beaver Tail” pull tabs are dated from 1962 to 1975
  • Modern pull tabs started in 1975

I guess we can draw some conclusions from this.

A) If you are finding Beaver Tail pull tabs then the site goes back to 1962. Paying attention to the depth most of this tabs are at, you can locate the 1962 level.

B) If you are only finding square tabs (stay tabs) then the site is post 1975. It is unlikely anyone came and cleaned all the beaver tail tabs before 1975 but I suppose it could happen.

GOLD RINGS ON THE FISHER CZ SERIES DETECTORS
I got this from a forum somewhere on the Web. I don’t know any details of the testing other than these results

16%….(25)…Ring tab
38%….(61)…Foil
3o%….(48)…Square tab
9%……(15)…Nickel
5%……(8)…..Zinc cent
2%……(4)…..High coin

Another study, this time with 259 gold rings of all different karat weights verifies the percentages

19.7%….(51)….Ring tab
35.5%….(92)….Foil
28.9……(75)….Square tab
10%…….(26)…Nickel
4.2%……(11)….Zinc cent
1.5%…….(4)…..High coin

Can you post the XP Deus VDI at 18 kHz (or even better all freqs) for the gold coins?

I created a gold ring program using 40-60 VDI as dig tones. Nice to see I was pretty close!

    Some more good info

    Best single frequency to use
    (per George Payne, MD design engineer);

    Silver dollar = 800 Hz
US Dime and Penny = 2.7 kHz
US Nickel & Gold Jewelry = 17 kHz
Gold Nuggets = above 20 kHz
Best frequencies for detecting all targets is between 10 and 15 kHz

    Garrett Pro-Pointer = 12 kHz

XP Deus VDI for 40 gold rings (18 kHz)

    31 2.33%
    32 2.33%
    40 2.33%
    43 9.30%
    44 4.65%
    46 4.65%
    47 11.63%
    49 2.33%
    50 11.63%
    52 2.33%
    55 18.60%
    56 9.30%
    58 4.65%
    59 2.33%
    61 6.98%
    68 2.33%
    73 2.33%
